JERSEY SPORTING DOGS
Breeding Program

To the best of our knowledge, our breeding stock is free of all common hereditary defects.  All Of our dogs have had their hip joints radiographed and evaluated by a veterinarian and are certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and or Penn Hip.  We now only use Penn Hips as it is the method recommended by the top vets and breeders in the country.   They are also examined by a board certified DMV Ophthalmologist and have been given a clean bill of eye health by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF).  We will be glad to give you the scores and diagnosis from any of those organizations.  Just being certified is not good enough.  You want a puppy from a sire and dam with a good or better hip test and a clear CERF test.
We want to provide you with a healthy puppy that is as pleasing to look at as it is to hunt over.  Of course temperament is always at the top of the list of qualities we breed for.
We take pride in the way our pups are raised.  They are not kept in a kennel, barn or basement, but in our home from the day they are whelped to to day they leave to go to their new homes.  We start caring for our pups even before they are born.  Our moms receive only the best in nutrition and vet care.  Our Moms all have a visit with a reproduction specialist DVM.  They also continue to hunt or train in the off season, while they're expecting to keep them in tip top mental and physical condition.   Many breeders believe that exposing the dam to game can hormonally imprint on the unborn puppies.  If there is anything we can do to produce top notch dogs, we do it.
Every mom is attended to closely during the whelp. All litters are born in our warm clean home.  We have spent many a long night watching over the whelping box to reassure the mom during the birthing process and help when needed.  We have found that putting the newborn pups on a nipple as soon as it is dried off, has made for some very strong pups and very few puppy deaths.  Because I do not work outside the home, our puppies are watched over day and night.  At 3 days old their tails are docked and dew claws removed.
We expose our pups to as many different environments as possible.  They hear all the noises of life.  Telephone, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, trucks, and other dogs.  As they grow we spend lots of time holding them,  talking to them,  playing with them and loving them.    At 3-4 weeks depending on the size of the litter, they start the weaning process.  By 4-5 weeks old they are eating 3 solid food meals a day and start the separation from Mom.  They still sleep with her at night and nurse during those hours for another week or so.  By 5-6 weeks they are fully weaned.  This is when we really get busy feeding, cleaning, vet visits for health check, micro-chip and shots, walks in the woods, exposure to pigeons and even water if its a summer litter.  We start the exposure to gun fire as well while they have the security of their litter mates.  We have found this to be a great start to gun breaking.  We encourage our pups to follow us and come when called.  Before they leave they will be sleeping in open door crates to start the process of crate training.  Our kids are grown, but we have plenty come visit so the pups will be very used to children.
At 7 weeks they will start to go to their new homes and the fun begins.  You will be given a Purina Pro Plan Puppy Starter Kit, which includes a sample of food.  We will explain the eating schedule and health care your puppy has had and needs for the future.  We fully register our pups in your name with the CKC (Canadian Kennel club), and with NAVHDA,the (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association).  So registration will be no cost to you.  Please know that we will always be happy to answer any questions you may have throughout your pups life.    We welcome back our own puppies for boarding on a small scale and keep them as we do our own, in our home.  We also provide training when our schedule allows.

Along with great dogs a breeding kennel needs specific goals. Jersey Sporting Dogs is small hobby kennel dedicated to improving the Braque Francais breed, period. We breed only one or two litters a year.  First we strive to produce the best Braque Francais money can buy.  One that makes an excellent personal hunting dog and an equally fine family companion.  Second we plan not only for the present, but more importantly for the future of this wonderful breed.  We use only the best in breeding stock to insure that the dogs coming from our kennel will have a positive impact on the breeds presence in the United States.  And third our aspiration is to be a Braque Francais breeder that you can trust.   One that you can always count on and hopefully come back to.

More often then not, our puppies are sold even before they are whelped.  To be fair to our customers we do keep a waiting list and require a $150 deposit to be placed on that list.  We will tell you where you are on that list and pups will be sold in that order.  The deposit is refundable if we do not have the sex puppy you were put on the list for, or if we can not get you a pup within a reasonable time frame.   When the time comes to make your choice, we will help you understand the personalities of all the pups.  We also put lots of nice pictures on the litters page along with bi-weekly updates, so you can watch you puppy grow and hear about their progression.  Although we may guide you in the picking process, the choice ultimately is yours.
